Autismo e superdotação: é possível confundir estas necessidades educacionais especiais?
(Text in Portuguese and in English).
Tanto as crianças superdotadas,
atividade preferida. Este fato pode durar meses. As crianças superdotadas e as

(Text in English)
Autism and giftedness: is it possible to confuse these special educational needs?
There may be
professionals who confuse autism with giftedness. One of the biggest
misconceptions is to think that the child with autism is always very limited,
and this is not true. The child with autism can have many talents.
In some cases of
autism, there is hyperlexia and this syndrome can confuse some families and
education and health professionals.
What
is hyperlexia?
It is a syndrome, often
present in children with autism, which involves the ability to read early and
obsess over numbers and letters. This means that the child with autism can
learn to read early. There are cases of children as young as 3 years old who already
have this ability, however, they have great difficulty in interpreting and
communicating.
This syndrome can even
confuse many professionals (teachers, psychologists, among others), leading
them to believe that these children are gifted.
But
what to do in this case?
It is important to
observe and interact with the child by asking questions about what he / she
read, about what he / she saw at a given moment and to analyze the possible
answers that the child will express. Observe his/her speech if it is functional
and if the child can communicate well.
Are children with
autism or gifted people antisocial?
Children with autism
and gifted children may experience difficulties in social interaction. In both
cases, the reason for the lack of interaction with other people may be the
environment where they are inserted and the social relationships that offer
little benefit to these children.
There are signs of
autism that are similar to those of gifted children. Both gifted children and
children with autism can have a very concentrated interest. There may be times
when these children spend a lot of time doing the same favorite activity. This
fact can last for months. Gifted children and children with autism have a keen
attention to detail, their interests and desires in carrying out a task can be
mistaken for obsession.
For this reason, the
more research there is regarding the skills and limitations of children with
autism and gifted children, the better the care for these children will be.
