Gifted Students in Canada
(Tradução logo abaixo)
Concerning programs for gifted
students, Otto Schmidt affirms:
Gifted students are all over the place.
Every country has them. Everybody has them with different degrees of giftedness
and styles of learning.
The biggest problem in educating them is consistency. In Ontario, Canada, we
have many different school boards and districts. Each one controls its own
gifted education and may or may not have specialized teachers in the field. So
serious problems arise. Highly populated areas, where there might be
universities or colleges, will more than likely have a highly educated,
intelligent population. There will almost naturally be more gifted students
from gifted parents. If limits are put on sizes of gifted programs, selection
criteria will then be very high. If students are being educated in a smaller
city, town or village, the school boards cover a larger territory. In their
smaller schools, they are more likely to have fewer gifted students and will
find it difficult to cluster them. Schools in areas with smaller populations
and a perhaps less educated population sometimes struggle to get enough
students into their gifted programs and therefore selection criteria, so that a
gifted group of students can be formed, can be significantly different by
offering lower entry points.
[...].
What do we do with high-performance
athletes? We put them in special schools. We give them expert training. We
nurture them. We drop thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars on the
Olympic team, for example. We value talent. We value abilities. Why don’t we
value intelligence in the same way? Why don't we put big money into developing
intelligence? Let's respect intelligence. Let's give it its due.
So, why should we work just as hard, or
harder, with gifted children and adults and nurture their abilities? If we put
money into nurturing intelligence, young people that are highly intelligent,
hopefully, cross fingers, will be possibly of greater benefit to our society.
We do that so that they can be more productive in our societies and have a good
future life for themselves as well. We all benefit from that.
One last thought. One of the worst
things we have in our world is gifted criminals/evil people. Remember, they
start out as gifted children with often special needs. They may not be inclined
to go to “the dark side” unless something causes them to go there. Frustration.
Boredom. Being misunderstood. Neglect. Being ignored. Not respected.
Under-appreciation. Let’s make sure that our schools are not the sources of
these catalysts. Value intelligence.

Com relação aos
programas para alunos superdotados, Otto Schmidt afirma:
Alunos superdotados estão
por todo lado. Cada país os tem. Todos os possuem com diferentes graus de
superdotação e estilos de aprendizagem.
O maior problema em
educá-los é a consistência. Em Ontário, Canadá, temos muitos conselhos
escolares e distritos diferentes.
Vamos
respeitar a inteligência.
desses catalisadores. Valorizemos a inteligência.
