Definir e diagnosticar a hiperlexia
(Text in Portuguese and in
English)
national autistic society, 2021).
A aprendizagem quanto à leitura
aprende sozinha (Assouline et al. 2008; Cardoso-Martins, & Silva, 2010; Lamônica et. al, 2013).
A
desenvolver satisfatoriamente.

Define and diagnose hyperlexia
The
definition of hyperlexia can be seen as a syndrome that encompasses an
extraordinary ability to read early and a great fascination for letters and
numbers. However, it is accompanied by deficiencies in other areas of child development
(Lamônica et. al, 2013; Brites, & Brites, 2019; The national autistic
society, 2021).
Learning about reading occurs
spontaneously and is not taught in the case of hyperlexia. This syndrome is not
the result of any teaching methodology. It is not necessary for anyone to teach
the child with hyperlexia to read or learn numbers. His/ Her ability to read
occurs neither with instructions nor with school education, he/she learns alone
(Assouline et al. 2008; Cardoso-Martins, & Silva, 2010; Lamônica et. al,
2013). Which makes this fact a reason for admiration and inquiry on the part of
many education and health professionals.
What draws the attention of many teachers is that this
child with hyperlexia simply learns to decode words, from the identification of
the letters and their groupings. The process in which the child transforms the
lines and curves that make up the letters into oralized sounds or a mental
image of the sound, occurs spontaneously, without the need for teacher support
(Lamônica et. al, 2013).
How
to diagnose hyperlexia?
It is
necessary to pay attention to some signs that can help with the diagnosis of
hyperlexia, for example, to observe if there is an early contact of the child
with letters and numbers (Autismspeaks, 2021).
Right
after one year of age, the child with hyperlexia begins to show interest in
letters and numbers and usually when he/she is three years old, he/she has the
ability to decode the letters and form some words. It is important to note
that, in general, the words formed by this child do not make sense to him/her
(Cossio et al. 2017).
The
child with hyperlexia can read whole sentences, however, his/her oral language
is not always functional and he/she can have a lot of difficulty in
interpretation (Grandin, & Panek, 2015).
Each
child, although presenting hyperlexia, will develop differently and may present
different characteristics, this means that the context in which the child lives
and the opportunities for care that are given to him/her can make a lot of
difference in his/her future life (Autismspeaks, 2021).
Therefore,
it is crucial to have trained professionals and families attentive to the
special educational needs of this child so that they receive an accurate
diagnosis and adequate care, in this way, they will be able to develop fully.
