Abstract:
The title of my
presentation announces a legacy. I use this term deliberately. Indeed, after 45
years of involvement in gifted education—which, by the way, I prefer to call
Academic Talent Development (ATD)—I am well aware that my professional career
is coming to an end. I have decided not to leave to others the task of
pinpointing the main ideas that I have fought for during that quasi
half-century, but to do it myself.
I prepared an
initial list of approximately two dozen ideas, definitely too many. But which
to choose for an hour-long presentation? Keeping in mind the
adage: "you should not bite more than you can chew", I cut
it by half, giving each theme its own five minutes of glory! The first half (D2)
focuses on the DMGT, the Differentiating Model of
Giftedness and Talent, the theory of talent development that has made me
internationally renowned.
(D3) [By
the way, let me point out that I strongly disagree with your use of
“sobredotação’ and sobredotado as a translation of giftedness; in English, the
terme is just “giftedness”, not “super-giftedness”; thus, the translation
should just be “dotação” and “dotado”.]
The more
practical second half will address the modalities of academic talent
development. I discuss all these themes in more detail in a recently published
book (D4) entitled “Differentiating giftedness from talent”, available
on the Amazon website. I consider this volume as the synthesis, the “bible” of
my professional career.

A primeira
conhecido.
(D3) [A
A segunda
profissional.
Biografia
do Professor Françoys Gagné.
Françoys Gagné
was born on October 6, 1940 in Montreal (QC), Canada. Benefiting from three
opportunities for academic acceleration, an early entrance to school and two
class skips, he completed his B.A. degree in Psychology in fourteen years
instead of seventeen (1946-60), followed by his master's degree in
1962.
After obtaining
his Ph.D. in psychology at the Université de Montréal (1966), Professor Gagné
devoted the first decade of his career to setting up and directing a major
research and intervention program within the bilingual Quebec system of
colleges (cegeps). The subject of that program was the evaluation of teaching
by students; it was called PERPE (Perceptions Étudiantes de la Relation
Professeurs-Étudiants) in French, and SPOT (Student Perceptions of Teaching) in
English.
His entrance at
the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in 1978 was the occasion for a major
career reorientation, namely the choice of talent development (gifted
education) as his new teaching and research focus. He devoted to that field the
rest of his academic career in the Department of psychology, namely over two
decades. His main research interests included his theoretical work on the
development of gifts and talents (see the DMGT tab), on the measurement of
attitudes (see the OGE-attitudes tab), and on the screening of students’ gifts
and talents by their peers and teachers (see the Tracking Talents tab).
Even after his
official retirement in 2001, he has pursued his research and publication
activities, as well as numerous international speaking tours. He has gained his
international renown mostly through his theory of talent development: the
Differentiating Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT). Professor Gagné has
received many prestigious professional prizes, including the Distinguished
Scholar Award (1996) from the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC –
USA), the International Award for Research (2021) from the World Council for
Gifted and Talented Children (WCGTC), as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award
(2022) from the MENSA Education and Research Foundation (USA).

Tradução da
biografia do Professor Françoys Gagné.
o Distinguished Scholar Award (1996) da National Association of Gifted Children
(NAGC – EUA), o International Award for Research (2021) do World Council for
Gifted and Talented Children (WCGTC), bem como o Lifetime Achievement Award
(2022) da Fundação de Educação e Pesquisa MENSA (EUA).
